With only one incumbent in the Nov. 6 Hawthorne school board election, voters have a chance to elect a board that may rise above the personal disputes of the past and get down to business. The candidates running for two board seats are Cristina Chiappe, who is seeking her third term; Eugene Krank, a businessman and physician with three children attending district schools; Alexandre Monteiro, a counselor and executive director of Moneta Gardens Improvement Inc., a nonprofit group that deals with health and human service needs; and parent Albert Sanchez. We feel voters should re-elect Chiappe, an adult school teacher who has the backing of the local teachers union. She authored the board’s “code of conduct” policy, which provides trustees with guidance on acceptable conduct during public meetings. Chiappe’s priorities include continuing the steady rise in standardized test scores, maintaining efforts to keep class sizes low and confronting the problem of soaring employee health-care costs in the district. Monteiro has a record of working to help needy families and creating health centers at school sites. Krank, who has served as a chess and basketball coach within the district, sees himself as a communicator with the diplomatic skills needed to work constructively with parents. He also advocates strengthening adult literacy as a way to help students. As a doctor, businessman and parent, Krank may bring some valuable perspectives to the board. On Election Day, we recommend that Hawthorne voters choose Cristina Chiappe and Eugene Krank.

Hopefully next weekend I can get some more game time and go from there.“I’m not saying that I’m there yet, this is just another step on my way to full recovery.
